Truth About Diet Pills

In this thin obsessed culture of others, the diet pill may be the savior to many people aspiring to reach the minuscule weights of popular celebrities and models. People, young and old, male and female scour magazines and websites to look for the best diet/weight loss pill. However, using only diet pills as your only weapon in fighting weight gain may not be a wise decision.

I'm sure you've heard of the names Xenical, Adipex, Meridia and Didrex. These are some of the most popular prescription diet pills available today. The are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are prescribed by doctors to their patients who need to lose weight. There are also diet pills especially made for those suffering with obesity.

Another type of diet pill are those available over-the-counter (OTC). They do not require a doctor's prescription so it is more accessible to consumers. They are also not regulated by the FDA and is actually considered by the agency as mere weight loss supplements.

Because of the variety of diet pills available (regulated or not) it is difficult to determine which is the best diet or weight loss pill to take.

Many experts, however recognize the dangers involved in taking OTC diet pills. Studies have shown that these pills can have side effects such as diarrhea, elevated blood pressure, nervousness, tremor, heart palpitations or worse heart failure. The FDA advices consumers to avoid pills that promise rapid weight loss without any additional activity, or products that claim to be the “best diet/weight loss pill” or those that bear descriptions such as “revolutionary”, “exotic”, “ancient”, etc.

Doctors and nutritionists agree that if you still want to take diet pills, you must ask for a doctor's supervision and combine it with exercise and a healthy diet. That is the best diet/weight loss strategy that no pill can ever do on their own.
